Calgary-based, Don has practiced litigation for over 30 years. Appointed King's Counsel, he has successfully appeared in civil and criminal courts, and in numerous regulatory hearings. He has extensive experience in securities enforcement matters, appellate proceedings, and commercial, employment, and insurance law.
As the former Chief Litigation Counsel at the Alberta Securities Commission, Don is an expert in securities enforcement matters. He has participated in dozens of cases and litigated the longest securities hearings in Alberta history.
Prior to the ASC, Don acted in private practice for employers (including two multi-national oil and gas companies) and employees with respect to HR issues and employee dismissal and severance.
Don has appeared numerous times in the Alberta Court of Appeal in both civil and regulatory cases, and twice in the Supreme Court of Canada. He has extensive written and oral appellate advocacy skills.
In private practice, Don represented several Alberta liability, disability and commercial insurers, focusing primarily on motor vehicle defence claims and some multi-million dollar commercial liability disputes.
Don has represented corporations and individuals in many types of commercial disputes, including interpretation of contracts, breaches, and damages.
Don has almost 20 years of teaching and lecturing experience - instructing hundreds of lawyers/attorneys in Canada and the USA how to properly and successfully conduct trials. He has extensive presentation experience on topics such as securities, evidence, writing skills, expert witnesses, cross examination, and interviewing/depositions.
